More Than Care at Home: Helping People Get Out and About Across North Shields and the North East
By Chloe Briggs · 8 September 2026

At Walfinch Newcastle, care is about more than support inside the home. From our base in North Shields, we help people stay independent, connected and involved in the places and activities that matter to them across North Tyneside, Newcastle and surrounding areas.
At Walfinch Newcastle, we believe good home care should help people continue living life their way.
For some people, that means support with personal care, medication, meals or everyday tasks at home. For others, it might mean having someone alongside them to go shopping, attend an appointment, enjoy a coffee, visit a favourite place or simply get out of the house for a change of scenery.
Our local team is based in North Shields, and we support people across North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Ponteland and selected communities across Northumberland.
Being locally based means we understand just how much our area has to offer.
Home care that goes beyond the front door
Home care is sometimes thought of as something that only happens inside a person's home, but that does not have to be the case.
Our approach is focused on independence, confidence and connection. Through companionship and our Time to Thrive approach, carers can support people to continue doing the things that are important to them.
That could include going for a short walk, visiting the shops, meeting a friend, attending a community group, enjoying lunch out or getting to an important appointment.
Support is always shaped around the individual. What feels meaningful to one person may be completely different to someone else.
Getting out and about in North Shields
There are plenty of places around North Shields that can offer a change of scenery and an opportunity to stay connected with the local community.
The North Shields Fish Quay is a familiar local spot for many people, whether that means enjoying the views, stopping for something to eat or simply spending some time by the river.
The town centre also gives people the opportunity to do some shopping, visit local businesses or combine errands with a coffee and some company.
For someone who may not feel confident going out alone, having a familiar carer alongside them can make outings feel much more manageable.
Tynemouth and the coast
Tynemouth is another popular destination for people living across North Tyneside.
A visit might include a stroll near the seafront, sitting and enjoying the sea air, visiting the village or stopping for a drink or bite to eat.
Further along the coast, Whitley Bay offers another great option for a relaxed outing. The promenade and surrounding town give people the chance to enjoy the coast while remaining connected to an area they may have known for many years.
These outings do not need to be complicated. Sometimes an hour out of the house can make a real difference to someone's day.
Newcastle and surrounding communities
Our carers can also support people with trips into Newcastle, whether that is for shopping, appointments, social activities or simply spending time somewhere familiar.
Places such as the Newcastle Quayside can be ideal for a gentle outing, while parks and green spaces across the area can offer quieter alternatives.
For people living in Gateshead, South Tyneside, Ponteland or surrounding parts of Northumberland, the same principle applies. Care should fit around the person's life rather than expecting their life to fit around care.
Supporting confidence and independence
Getting out and about can become more difficult for many different reasons.
Someone may have reduced mobility, feel less confident after a fall, be living with dementia, find public transport difficult or simply appreciate having some company.
Companionship care can provide reassurance while still encouraging the person to make their own choices and remain as independent as possible.
A carer might help plan the outing, make sure everything needed is ready, travel alongside the person and provide support while they are out.
It is not about taking over. It is about making everyday life feel possible.
